What is Norco?

Norco is an amalgamation of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is an opioid (narcotic) pain medication. Acetaminophen is a less sturdy pain reliever that increases the effect of hydrocodone.

Norco is a prescription medication. It is a controlled substance as an opioid, present in the market as an oral tablet and an oral solution.

The oral tablet is available as the brand name drugs Norco and Vicodin, also available in its generic form. Sometimes, they may not be available in every strength or form as the brand-name version.

What are the uses of Norco?

The use of Norco is to reduce moderate to moderately severe pain.

It is a fixed combination of opioid hydrocodone and the non-opioid analgesic acetaminophen. It indicates relief of severe pain of acute, chronic, and postoperative types. The strength of each component of the drug may vary.

Its recreational use has accelerated in recent years due to opioid effects.

Its risk in pregnancy cannot be rule out. Low concentration of acetaminophen excretes through breast milk. However, the excretion of hydrocodone is unknown.

Non-occurrence of Animal controlled studies in case of this medication.

Use caution due to the possible risk of toxicity in kidney and liver impairment.

How does Norco work?

Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen works in your brain to block pain signals. They decrease your ability to feel pain.

Hydrocodone works by binding to the mu-opioid receptor. The working of acetaminophen is still unclear, but it may involve blocking the creation of prostaglandins.

It may prescribe following an injury or a major surgery or treat other types of severe pain like cancer or arthritis.

Hydrocodone comes with various warnings due to its high potential for abuse and addiction.

It is taken orally and has to pass through your digestive system before you feel its effects. It starts showing its results within an hour.

A 10 mg oral dose reaches peak concentrations in the bloodstream in roughly 1.3 hours following ingestion.

Regular consumption of the drug leads to building up a tolerance to the drug over time. For those, it may take longer to feel relief from the pain.

When this happens, your doctor might want to increase your dose or switch you to different pain medication. Don’t take an enormous amount of the drug without asking the doctor.

What to know before using Norco?

You must not use Norco if you are allergic to Norco’s component or in case of recent consumption of alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, or other narcotic medications.

Do not take Norco if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past two weeks because it may lead to a dangerous interaction. MAO inhibitors consist of isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.

Interaction of some medicines with hydrocodone may lead to serotonin syndrome, which is a severe condition. Tell your doctor if you already take medication for depression, mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, migraine headaches, serious infections, or prevention of nausea and vomiting.

To ensure Norco is safe, tell your doctor if you ever had:

  • Breathing problems
  • Sleep apnea
  • Liver disease
  • A drug or alcohol addiction
  • Kidney disease
  • Head injury/seizures
  • Urination problems or
  • problems with your thyroid pancreas or gallbladder

Norco is likely to cause breathing problems in old age people and people who are severely ill and malnourished.

Your baby might become dependent upon drugs if you use narcotic medicine while you are pregnant. It may lead to life threatening withdrawal symptoms after the delivery of the baby. Tell your doctor about your pregnancy or your plan to become pregnant.

It can pass into breast milk and lead to severe consequences for a nursing baby. It will help if you do not breastfeed while using Norco.
